Design the provisional so it can be removed

A temporary network is a real need: a maintenance shutdown, construction work, a project with a deadline, an area that will operate for a few months. The problem is not creating it — it is creating it with no planned exit.

Three decisions make the provisional genuinely reversible. The first is explicit identification: every temporary element is marked as such, with its planned removal date on record. A label that reads "temporary — remove after the October shutdown" has practical effect, because at the next intervention someone knows what to do with it.

The second is isolation: the provisional goes into its own segment, not into the first segment available. That limits what it can reach and makes removal safe, since nothing critical has come to depend on it by accident.

The third is a scheduled review: a check after the planned date, to decide between removing it or formally incorporating it into the permanent design. Incorporating is a legitimate decision; what is not acceptable is permanence by omission.

During a shutdown, outside crews need connectivity to consult documentation, log their work, and talk to their own offices. Refusing that does not work — the need solves itself in the worst possible way, with someone plugging into whatever port is nearby or bringing in a router of their own.

The better path is to have the provisional planned: a third-party segment with internet access and nothing else, available at the points where the contractors work, with a defined end date. It is cheap to maintain and it eliminates the entire category of improvisation.

Segments defined at design time, not afterwards

The deployment separates administrative, operations, equipment that cannot be patched, third parties, and guests from the start, and places the administration of the assets in a restricted segment.

Defining that at design time costs configuration. Doing it afterwards, on a flat network in production, costs downtime and a second round of interventions — and in an industrial plant, each of those rounds depends on a maintenance window.

The city's recorded risk is worth remembering here: a poorly segmented VLAN is more common than a missing one. Creating the segments is the easy part; what makes them real is the communication policy between them — denying by default and allowing what the operation demands.

The operations area: size by the route, not the floor plan

In the warehouse and production areas, wireless coverage is sized around the device that moves and the route it travels, not the area on paper.

Three factors change the outcome. Mounting height, because a high ceiling covers a large area with weak signal at person height. The contents of the space, because metal structure and stored material reflect and absorb signal, and a full warehouse propagates differently from an empty one. And movement, because the circulation of goods changes the signal path continuously, which forces the design to carry margin for the worst arrangement of the day.

The general rule holds: cable for what is fixed — terminals, scales, label printers, access points, cameras — and wireless for what moves.

Expansion planned instead of improvised

The best defense against the eternal provisional is slack in the permanent. Spare cabled drops at the positions where expansion is likely, support infrastructure with free capacity, and a distribution layout that allows repositioning an access point without a new project.

When the next need appears — and it will — there is a ready path to serve it within the standard, instead of pressure to improvise.
